For centuries the Tao Te Ching, the book of ancient wisdom by Lao Tsu, has offered insight, inspiration, and consolation to millions of readers. Although numberless translations and commentaries exist around the world, Return to the Mother, A Lover’s Handbook, is a groundbreaking effort and a unique contribution to the canon of American poetry. In this volume, internationally known poet Red Hawk offers poetic reflections on these much-loved ancient sutras. This collection of 94 contemporary poems (each,16 lines), brings this perennial wisdom into the 21st century—and adds the flavor and fragrance of Zen and Gurdjieff’s dharma teachings in a spare poetic marriage with Lao Tsu.

Each poem invites the reader to bring this wisdom to his or her daily practice of self-observation and self-remembering. The poet begs for a return to the true Self, which he symbolizes as the place of the Mother within.

Our Mother has no words, She is
Silence, She is the present, here-

now. To be here-now, in this body,
is to return to Our Mother . . .

Animal Medicine and Shamanic Journeying

We are made of light, sound, energy waves. That’s why we resonate to sound and why sounds are so healing for our emotional and physical bodies. The drum brings the physical and mental side back in touch with the spiritual and emotional. When we connect back to Mother Earth’s heartbeat, the healing & balancing that we need comes easily. The heartbeat can help release stress, tension and anxiety. It provides a deep state of relaxation. It improves mental clarity and increases your level of physical energy and mental concentration. Therefore, it aids in good physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.

The Drum is the Heartbeat of Mother Earth and a Medicine Tool used for centuries by all indigenous people for healing and celebration. When we connect back to Mother Earth’s heartbeat, the healing & balancing that we need comes easily. Each Drum is unique and carries its own sound and energy. What will your Drum sound like?

After a fire ceremony to honor the drum hide and the animals that provided them, we will share the techniques of tying Drums using a continuous lashing of sinew (usually about 50 ft long) and tightening. This is a complex but very effective way to create a Drum. Each Drum will be different and unique and will take time to create. We will limit the number of participants to ensure that every Drum will receive the time and attention necessary.

The skins used for the Drum heads carry their own unique energy and medicine and it is important to keep those energies in mind as each Drum is created.

DEER MEDICINE teaches us to use the power of gentleness to touch the hearts and minds of wounded beings who are seeking healing and offers safety to those who are seeking peace.

ELK MEDICINE is about stamina and has a curious type of warrior energy that teaches that pacing yourself will allow you to go the distance.

BUFFALO MEDICINE is knowing that abundance is present when all relations are honored as sacred and when gratitude is expressed to every living part of creation.

MOOSE MEDICINE uncovers the depth of who you are and aligns you with your inherent wisdom.

HORSE MEDICINE symbolizes personal drive, passion, and appetite for freedom.

We create each Drum in a sacred way, honoring the animal and its Medicine. We will birth our drums in community and together take a Shamanic Journey for the name of each drum created.

On Sunday, we will enjoy time to come together in circle, learn more about indigenous animal totems and archetypes and journey to meet our own personal power animal.
